Open courses, a solution for efficient cost management

Since last year we have gotten used to hearing the word “crisis” once every three sentences. And no matter the importance we each assign to it, we all feel at least one effect: we look at our budgets and we have to adjust investments and expenses.

At least for the first half of this year, some investments are on hold. However confronted with the acute need of increasing efficiency, what do we do with those managers in which we have to continue to invest? This is the question we most frequently receive from our clients ever since the end of last year. Because development needs still exist, with increased focus on rising internal efficiency.

An alternative for training programs aimed at multiple levels of organizational hierarchy are open courses. For short and medium term they can meet the development needs of key managers that are crucial in an organization. Training suppliers have already presented their offers for 2009, which cover a wide range of subjects and prices.

The advantages of open courses are the following:

• These types of programs are suitable in the case of progressive investments for all types of companies, they allow a greater budgetary flexibility as well as focus on key individuals

• Although the cost per individual is increased open courses help the client optimize all logistical and organizational costs that exist in the case of in house programs

• Flexibility when it comes to picking dates and sending employees. It's much harder to create a group of 12 managers for an in house course but with open courses you can train your top three

• Even though at first glance open courses seem to be a very precise development tool, this doesn't mean you can't create a coherent process for each individual. Large open course suppliers offer a wide array of subjects, that can be mixed in order to cover individual abilities, depending on personal, team and business needs

• For a bigger number of courses or participants you also get discounts that can reduce your costs.

In principle any company can take advantage of open courses. However these are best suited for those organizations that have already invested in training and want to continue developing their managers, even though they have a smaller budget. As we've said the offers present on the market cover a wide range of abilities depending on specific needs and the budget the HR department has at its disposal.

There are certain elements that have to be taken into consideration such as the quality of the trainings and the ROI. In a period where budgets are smaller and every investment counts, the smallest price is not necessarily the smart way to go about doing things. The need for saving can't justify choosing courses where you only get general information or ideas taken from books, without any attention paid to rapid learning or the way in which the knowledge you received can be put into practice

Our advice to those that are interested in such an alternative is to analyze the market quite well, check suppliers and even ask for client recommendations if they deem it as being necessary. When your budget is limited every investment should count!
