| How to "Think Positive"! |
|
 |
Context:
Both the global business environment as well as the Romanian one are already moving at a pace that surpasses our capacity to adapt to the changes being generated. Corporations are beginning to falter and the traditional way of doing business is slowly starting to disappear. This sort of environment generates an increased need for capable leaders, in contrast with a lack of qualified personnel. Alongside the training solutions we offer, we also thought about bringing innovative people and ideas to the Romanian public. We started off with our first conference, its subject being the need of a new style of leadership: women leadership.
Solution:
We decided to approach this subject, despite being somewhat controversial in Romania, because women represent a resource that is insufficiently recognized and valued by companies and managers. Even more, in our experience as well as that of our clients, companies that perform, rely on diversity when it comes to management positions, mixing male and female styles of leadership.
In western Europe and the Unites States this subject, the impact of male and female attributes when it comes to business success, has been under intense debate and measurement. Publications such as The Economist and consulting companies such as McKinsey approached and analyzed this subject in great detail. The first conclusion was that those companies who have a significant number of women in management positions obtain better financial results then those who have very few women.
Our partners from Tom Peters Company, with which we have been collaborating for many years, are ardent supporters of this subject, and therefore we decided to invite them to Romania. With the help of Juli Ann Reynolds, President and CEO of TPC, we presented a study that was conducted together with KPMG, concerning performance in companies that are run or owned by women.
Key elements:
• Partners. Being an event that is not part of our core business we wanted a co-organizer with experience in this field. The natural choice was a collaboration with the Cariere magazine.
• Image. Approaching this kind of controversial subject, there was a risk that this type of event would be viewed in an extreme way, a feminist one and not as an alternative to the problems facing the business environment. With the help of our colleagues from Kuantum, we managed to create a correct positioning and adequate image of the event: "Think Positive! The impact of women leadership on the organization!"
• Content. Although we started from studies with statistical
validation about the positive impact of women on businesses, this information
was based on the situation in the United States. There was a need to offer a
local perspective on the subject. We started by creating common premises regarding
the communication styles that women adopt and the different types of leadership.
We also added a panel which was moderated by Juli Ann on the event agenda. The
panel was comprised of Romanian business leaders, both men and women. The conference
ended with a presentation of the results of the "Women Culture Study".
Lessons and observations:
We wanted to bring new types of solutions for the Romanian public, solutions that have a wider range of accessibility than trainings. Being something we hadn't tried before, we expected problems and challenges, because we were about to test whether or not a conference can create an environment that supports information learning and delivery to the standards Human Invest has set forth.
The feedback we received both from our colleagues as well as from participants convinced us that this direction was worth exploring. The true feedback is whether or not participants will use the information they received during the event to make changes in the way business is being run in Romania. But this type of feedback can be seen in time. We hope we've managed to convince as many managers as possible to "Think Positive"!
